Retention

Extend To Defend

The Your State Army National Guard offers unmatched benefits to support you and your family. It’s a place where you can advance your career by building skills, earning certifications, and taking on leadership opportunities that prepare you for success both in and out of uniform.

With the flexibility of part-time service, you can balance your civilian career, education, and personal goals while continuing to serve your state and nation.

Additionally, only current Soldiers and retirees are eligible to refer leads through the Enlistment Enhancement Program, earning a $1,000 referral bonus for every qualified lead that results in enlistment.

As a current Soldier, you can also transfer your G.I. Bill education benefits to your family members, providing them with valuable support for their educational goals.

Choosing not to extend means losing access to these exclusive incentives, including the referral bonus and the ability to transfer education benefits. Stay Guard strong and secure the benefits that make a difference for you and your family.

Incentives

Three Year Reenlistment/Extension Bonus (REB)
  • $6,000 paid in lump sum

  • Duty MOS Qualified

  • Pay grade E-4 through E-7

  • Less than 13 years and one-month time in service, on contract start date, if enrolled in the High 36 Retirement System (Legacy)

  • No less than 5 years and no more than 6 years and one-month time in service, on contract start date, if enrolled in the Blended Retirement System (BRS)

Extension Swag

Soldiers who extend for at least one year can choose one extension swag item as a token of appreciation. Using the Extension Swag Order Form, you can select one item, which will be presented to you after your Retention NCO confirms your extension contract through iPERMS.

For those extending for three years, you’ll also be eligible for the extension bonus, adding even more value to your continued service.

Stay committed, stay rewarded. Extend today and let us celebrate your dedication to the mission.

Education Considerations

Tuition Assistance: Continue receiving or start using towards a college degree. If Federal & State TA are used at an Oregon public college/university, it covers 100% tuition, most fees and a book stipend. Federal TA can be used at a college/university out of state.

Ch1606 Montgomery Selected Reserve G.I. Bill: If you originally enlisted with the NG for 6 years or will reenlist for 6 years, you can use this G.I. Bill. The current rate is $481 (effective 1 Oct 2025). If you qualify, you also contract for the $350 G.I. Bill Kicker with a 6 year enlistment or reenlistment. Combined this G.I. Bill & Kicker is $831 per month and it’s paid directly to you while attending college. Best part, you can use TA funding to pay your school and receive the G.I. Bill/Kicker for anything else (save it or spend it).

Credentialing Assistance: Continue receiving or start using towards over 2,000 nationally recognized credentials like information technology, truck driving, personal trainer and many, many more!

Post 911/Ch33 G.I. Bill: If you qualified during your previous service or want to qualify for the BEST G.I. Bill, now is your chance. This G.I. Bill requires very specific Active Duty service and is the only education benefit you can transfer to a dependent. Transferring the Post 911 incurs a 4 year service obligation you must complete. Give a spouse and/or child the gift of education!

ETS

Begin with the ETS Unit Clearing Requirements section to familiarize yourself with the mandatory tasks you need to complete.

ETS Unit Clearing Requirements

To successfully clear your unit and the YSARNG, you must complete the MANDATORY tasks listed below.

Failure to complete any task may result in delays in receiving your NGB 22 (discharge document) or financial liability for missing Organizational Clothing and Individual Equipment (OCIE), resulting in a Financial Liability Investigation of Property Loss (FLIPL).

1
Schedule OCIE Turn-in

To avoid financial liability, you must turn in your Organizational Clothing and Individual Equipment (OCIE) to your unit Supply NCO or the Central Issue Facility (CIF). Failure to complete this task will result in a Financial Liability Investigation of Property Loss (FLIPL), holding you financially responsible for any missing equipment.

  • Equipment may be turned in as early as 120 days before your ETS date.

  • Use the below “Schedule OCIE Turn-in Form” to request an appointment, providing at least two date and time options for meeting your Supply NCO.

Your Supply NCO can assist you in obtaining your current OCIE record to ensure you have gathered and accounted for all items.

2
Oregon Exit Survey

This  survey is your opportunity to share feedback about your decision to ETS. In addition to identifying areas for improvement, the survey helps YSARNG leadership, including The Adjutant General (TAG), Unit Commands, and Retention NCOs, understand the positive aspects of your service experience.

Your input is vital in shaping future policies, improving organizational effectiveness, and building on the strengths of the Guard.

Please take your time to provide thoughtful and accurate responses, as your perspective contributes to the ongoing growth and success of the YSARNG.

3
NGB Exit Survey

Designed for Soldiers with 120 days or less remaining on their service obligation and who have not committed to extending, this brief 5-question survey gathers insights into your decision-making process.

The information collected is shared with both the National Guard Bureau (NGB) and YSARNG leadership to better understand your reasons for separation and to refine support for Soldiers.
